As part of SIGNAL’s annual Strategy & Security scholarly series that began in 2011 with the first-ever such event, SIGNAL hosted another unique Chinese delegation in Israel in June 2014. The delegates participated in a workshop SIGNAL conducted in collaboration with the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs (JCPA). Lt. Colonel (res.) of IDF, Elliot Chadoff, guided the delegation through the Golan Heights to its border with Syria discussing Israel’s history in that region. Major General (res.) Uzi Dayan led the guests from China throughout the Jordan Valley, explaining his views on the strategic importance of that region. Major-General (Res.) Amos Gilad and former Mossad director Shabtai Shavit were some of the speakers who concluded the seminar at the School of Government at the Herzliya Inter-Disciplinary Center (IDC). During the seminar week, members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs research department and scholars from the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), including Director Amos Yadlin as well as scholars from the Begin Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, among others, participated in briefings and dialogues.
The delegates had the opportunity to experience Israel first hand with Land of Israel tours of Jerusalem, the Dead Sea and Masada. The entire event was conducted in Chinese and English and all materials were provided in both languages. SIGNAL brought the translator from China because there are no experienced translators in Israel in the field of geopolitics.
