What does Israel mean?

Israel is the name given to the Patriarch Jacob after he successfully wrestled with an angel.
It is a combination of two Hebrew words ישר and א-ל and it means “will/can struggle/rule with God”, in recognition of Jacob’s ability to hold his own with an angel of God.
The term Israel eventually came to refer both the people of Israel (the Jews) and the land of Israel (the Jewish homeland).
